Alonso Leads FIA Formula One Championship

After this weekends racing at the Korean Grand Prix, Spanish driver Fernando Alonso finds himself at the top of leader board with a clear 11 points ahead of Mark Webber.

After the most interesting start to a grand prix we have seen for a while - starting under the safety car due to the weather issues, on lap 3 the race was red flagged and called off due to the severe weather. On the restart of the race, again under safety car conditions, Vettel was in the lead as he qualified first, followed by Webber and Alonso behind him.

After the race you could hear the happiness of Alonso as he laughed hysterically through the radio back to his team mates. He commented about the championship after the race:

"We know with the new points system everything can change in one race - if you don't score, you lose 25 points to your opponents," said the Spaniard.

"Here it was bad luck for Mark and Sebastian. Anything can happen in the next two races. As we repeat many times, being consistent is very important, we cannot forget we need to be on the podium and fighting for the victory in the last two races."

Hamilton was confident in the rain managing to find grip straight away commenting over the team radio saying “its dried up so much already” - Hamilton finished in second position and was happy about his result. He commented after the race that it was a impressive race and he was happy with the result considering the last 3 races. He added:

"My tyres were shot at the end, so it was just about trying to get the car home," he said.

Massa managed to lose second position to Hamilton after he pitted at the same time as Hamilton and Schumacher. He was told not to push too much as the team mechanics wanted to protect the tyres to finish the race.

Webber span off on lap 19 between turn 12 and 13, losing control and hitting the barrier and collecting Nico Rosberg at the same time. He commented about the incident after the race:

"Totally my fault. I got on the kerb on the exit of Turn 12 and it was a very slow-motion moment off the back of that kerb. Totally my mistake. Wasn't my day. And I collected Nico as well. It was a long one; I thought I had enough to catch it. Positions are not important - the points are the most important thing. This is my second non-finish of the year. There are still two races to go, I'll do my absolute best."

Vettel’s engine blew up on lap 48 sending a shower of sparks across the race track, giving Hamilton the chance to move up to second position. Vettel commented in an interview after the race:

"It was such a hard moment," he added

"With Mark's crash it was hard for us as a team but when I look at myself I know the reason for the failure was not my fault, it was nothing to do with my performance or speed. At the time there was no sign of the engine defect. In turn 17 I suddenly lost a row of cylinders and had strong vibrations. Only half the engine was working.”

Button managed to finish 12th overall after a race to which he wasn’t on his side. He had used up all his wet weather tyres, so had to complete half the race on intermediates, sliding all over the road and struggling to get grip. After the race he commented:

"I just didn't have any grip, and at times I was the slowest person on the circuit. Also I was just destroying tyres. It's been a sad Grand Prix."
