Bahrain GP Cancelled

The Bahrain Grand Prix has been cancelled due to anti-government protests.

It was made official today at approximately 4pm(GMT) that the Bahrain Grand Prix due to be on the 13th of March would be cancelled due to civil unrest.

The season will now start on the 27th of March in Australia.

The FIA state that the race could still be rescheduled, the FIA issued a statement:

"The FIA is responsible for the international calendar as well as all matters of safety relating to the stakeholders involved in Grand Prix racing. We support the decision."

Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifah, Crown Prince said about the call off:

"We must focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting to a later date," he added

"After the events of the past week, our nation's priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united."

Martin Brundle commented:

"The Crown Prince has a lot of things under consideration at the moment, a lot of decisions and discussions - not just around Formula 1,” he added

"I don't think we were looking forward to going to Bahrain, shouting about a pole position lap or applauding a podium, when they've had so much turmoil there. The deaths and injuries have been a tragedy.”

"It is absolutely the right decision for F1."

Most of the drivers agree for the race to be called off due to the turmoil that Middle East is suffering from.

Mark Webber was interviewed a few weeks ago and he said at the time that he didn’t see the race starting in Bahrain - but is happy that the race is starting in his home land - Australia on the 27th of March.
