Australian Webber Wins British Grand Prix

The infamous British Grand Prix at Silverstone was held on Sunday and Australian Mark Webber drove a fantastic race to clinch first place.

Webber had a fantastic launch away from the lights on pole position and finished in first position. Even with a brief lap with the safety car out, Webber seemed to pull away from Hamilton as soon as the safety car went in and lap after lap the Red-Bull machine was physically quicker than the Mercedes.

Webber commented on the team radio after the race:

“Fantastic guys, not bad for a number two driver”

Sebastian Vettel went wide on the first corner fighting with fellow team mate Webber and got himself a puncture and had to pit on the first lap. Vettel was also fighting with Schumacher on lap 41 and the German driver barely leaving enough room for the Red-Bull Racing car to over take as Vettel’s two wheels were on the grass but he even managed to overtake Sutil to finish 7th in the race.

Hamilton started in 4th position on the grid after qualifying with a car that he wasn’t happy with. He commented on how he wasn’t happy with the car:

"Our car is very difficult to drive this weekend. It's very difficult to put a lap together." He added

“I had to nail that lap as if my life depended on it – and I don’t know how I managed to get so far up the grid.”

But after driving a brilliant race the Brit finished in 2nd position and still managed to cheer the crowd at the end of the race.

Jenson Button, like his team mate had problems with his car and had a poor qualifying session only managing 14th on the grid. Button commented on the car:

"The car was undriveable," he added "I think there's something wrong with the car”.

Button still managed to fight his way through the traffic to finish in 4th overall, just missing out on the podium for the possible 2nd and 3rd place.

Martin Brundle, BBC Commentator commented:

"That result is a great save by McLaren. For Button to finish fourth after starting 14th is brilliant."

Alonso started 3rd on the grid, but was served a drive through penalty for swerving to miss a slowing down Kubica as he had problems with his car. Alonso cut across the corner onto the grass at Vale to miss hitting the Polish driver, but was served with the penalty 8 laps later.

David Coulthard commented:

"I think that drive-through penalty for Alonso is very harsh. If he hadn't cut the corner, there was going to be contact. Normally he would simply have to concede the place back. The fact Kubica's car has stopped isn't Ferarri's fault."

Renault driver Robert Kubica commented after he retired:

"Something broke on the 'diff', so rear axle. Fernando and I had a fight, I was much slower, but he overtook me by cutting the corner, and on my last lap I was informed he had to give back the position, but then I had to retire."

Kamui Kobayashi, who finished in the points in the European GP drove another brilliant race, starting 12th on the grid and finishing in 6th place.
