Drink Drive Limit To Stay
The Government have announced that the current drink drive limit is to stay and will not be lowered.
Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond announced that greater enforcement of the drink drive law would have more of an effective approach than lowering the limit itself.
The proposed limit would have been reduced from 80mg to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, as proposed by Sir Peter North - this is the equivalent of a pint of beer. The planned reduction of the drink drive limit would have put the UK inline with the most of Europe.
Adrian Tink, RAC’s motoring strategist said:
“It’s disappointing news, especially as the Government had a clear mandate from motorists to reduce the legal limit – nearly 90% of drivers told us that they backed a reduction in the limit. It really is a missed opportunity to re-enforce the message that drink-driving is unacceptable.”
Hammond’s plans for enforcing the current law are;
Removing the right for a blood test if the drive blows under 40% on the roadside
Drivers over a certain limit to attend more training and more driving assessments
A separate offence for driving under the influence of drugs
