Euro NCAP Best Performing Cars
Euro NCAP have announced the best performing cars for car crash testing.
In 2010 Euro NCAP tested 29 cars, at which 65% of them reached the acquired 5-star rating. Comparing this to 2009 where 90% of the cars tested reached the 5-star rating. This does not automatically mean that the cars we are driving now will be worse in a crash, Euro NCAP say that tougher criteria is to be met before they give the car a true 5-star value.
The poorest results in 2010 were the Citreon Nemo, with 3 stars and the Landwind C9, which only achieved 2 stars.
The top five performing cars are below:
Executive category: BMW 5 Series
Small Family category: Alfa Romeo Giulietta
Supermini category: Honda CR-Z
Small off-road 4×4 category: Kia Sportage
Small MPV category: Toyota Verso
To be the top achiever in Euro NCAP testing, the results are a combined figure from four areas of assessment, adult, child, pedestrian and safety assist.
Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP secretary general said:
"Every year, car manufacturers constantly work to innovate and make their cars better and safer for the driver, whatever the size of the vehicle. The presence in these categories of high performing 5 star cars demonstrates car manufacturers' commitment to safety for all sizes of vehicles."
Since 2009, Euro NCAP have also been testing the factory traction control systems also known as the Electronic Stability Control tests. Euro NCAP requires this to be fitted as a part of the safety system within a car. ESC is there to reduce the number of deaths and injuries resulting from accidents where the driver would be at fault.
