Government Set To Toughen Drink And Drug Driving Laws
A recent survey from the government show that the current drink driving law could be reviewed. This means that ‘a pint’ at your local could soon be a thing of the past.
Currently the blood alcohol level is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, the new law could see this reducing down to 50mg per 100ml. The survey shows that out of 800 people 71% agreed that the drink-drive limit should be cut.
92% would like a new anti drug-drive law to be introduced for people driving under the influence of drugs. Currently there is no ‘law’ for drug driving. A driver found under the influence of drugs can only be prosecuted for dangerous driving but only if there is proof.
Research shows that driving under the influence are five times more likely to be involved in an accident.
Surprisingly he Tories did not back the idea of the new law, Theresa Villiers, Transport Secretary said:
“We do not believe that the case has been made to justify such a change,” she added
“We would keep the existing limit and focus on improving enforcement of the current rules on drink driving.”
Over 430 people are killed due to drink or drug related accidents. Lord Adonis, Transport Secretary said:
“430 people a year are killed on our roads in drink drive incidents that is 430 too many.”
