Jenson Button Wins Australian Grand Prix

The 2010 Australian Grand Prix was won by British driver Jenson Button, finishing with a clear 12 second lead.

Starting in 4th position on the grid with wet conditions on the track, Button fought to the top with accidents happening around him in the torrential rain, then made a gamble pitting and going onto slick tyres - some people thought it would be too early as Button went wide and slid off the track but this paid off as both Ferraris had to stop for fresh slick tyres whilst Button took the lead.

Team mate Lewis Hamilton finished in 6th position after a coming together with Mark Webber in the final laps of the race. Hamilton already unhappy about his pit stop was fighting for 4th position with Alonso when the accident happened, Hamilton said with an interview with the BBC:

"I probably had one of the drives of my life but unfortunately due to the strategy I got put back and I was taken out by Mark Webber. I drove my heart out today and I think I deserved better. The strategy was not right. Everyone else in front of me did one stop and I did two."

Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren team principal commented:

"It was a fantastic race by Jenson, in truth he called that first stop and it got him the win, it was his bravery to make that call. With Lewis we made a team call which disadvantaged him but it was a fantastic job by Jenson, we're happy with that one. It's been a tough start to the year we knew we'd win some races and we won this one. He won that by his racing and his call on the tyres, he got it spot on."

Legend Michael Schumacher finished in 10th position after having to come into the pits for a new front wing after colliding with Alonso in the early stages of the race then struggling to get back in the lead after getting stuck behind newbie Jaime Alguersuari from Toro Rosso.

John Travolta was at the finish line with the chequered flag to finish the race.
