Mobile Phone Use In The Drivers Seat

A recent survey has produced some worrying results with drivers still using their mobile phone whilst driving.

Despite stringent laws about not using a mobile phone whilst driving, the result that has come back with a staggering 28% increase of mobile phone users whilst driving.

The Department for Transport have released results to show that over the past year, mobile phone users increased from 1.1% to 1.4% for car drivers and from 2.2% to 2.6% for van and lorry drivers.

Neil Grieg, Director of policy and research from the IAM said about the results:

"Along with consistent and high-profile policing, drivers need to be educated about how and why driving on the phone is so dangerous," he added:

"Deaths and injuries linked to mobile pone use wreck lives and are completely avoidable. The majority of road users deserve to be protected from an irresponsible and selfish minority.

"Enforcement is the key weapon against them. More high-profile policing is the answer but unfortunately many police forces appear to be cutting back in this direction."

Results show that using a mobile phone whilst driving your car, reduces your reaction time by half whilst having a chat, or more than that if you decide to send a text whilst driving.

Police have taken a interest with the latest report and will be clamping down on mobile phone usage. If caught using a mobile phone and driving, it carries a £60 pound fix penalty notice and 3 points on your licence and even worse if you kill someone whilst using your phone, the sentence of causing death by dangerous driving could carry a prison sentence of 14 years.
