Uninsured Hotspots Revealed

The MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau) have released a report to show the UK’s top hotspot for uninsured cars on the roads today.

Topping the leader board is Barkerend in Bradford. This area in Bradford BD3 has topped the leader board for the past 13 years for uninsured cars in the UK.

The following top five postcode areas show the most uninsured cars.

  • BD3 (Barkerend, Bradford), West Yorkshire
  • M12 (West Gorton, Manchester), Greater Manchester
  • B10 (Small Heath, Birmingham), West Midlands
  • B21 (Handsworth, Birmingham), West Midlands
  • B8 (Saltley, Birmingham), West Midlands

With all these uninsured drivers on the road, the report still shows that the overall percentage of uninsured drivers has actually reduced by 20% in the last four years from 1.8million to 1.4million drivers.

Regional uninsured areas are as follows, these show that area as a whole for uninsured drivers:

  • Metropolitan (11%)
  • Merseyside (10%)
  • Greater Manchester (8%)
  • West Midlands (6%)
  • West Yorkshire (6%)

This shows that in the capital is where 1 in 10 cars are not insured and drivers would most likely be caught in an accident with a uninsured driver in the London area.

Driving a car uninsured is an offence and can lead to your car being seized, a £200 fixed penalty, 6 penalty points in your license and if your car is towed away, a £150 recovery charge from the policy and storage costs, if the car is not claimed within 14 days, the car will either be scrapped or sold on to pay the costs.

Ashton West, Chief Executive at MIB said:

"The 20 percent reduction in the number of uninsured drivers on the roads is a significant step in the right direction, particularly in key hotspots such as Barkerend in Bradford and West Gorton in Manchester. The level of seizures and criminal convictions demonstrates that uninsured drivers are consistently being caught and removed from the road. But more drivers need to buy a policy to cover them on the road.”
