Volkswagen Passat Drives 1,531 Miles In One Tank
A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled by a standard production car on a single take of fuel.
Gavin Conway and his team that set the record are from The Sunday Times. The challenge was driving from Maidstone in Kent to the South of France and back. The Passat finally ran out of fuel close to Calais after driving a total of 1,526.63 miles.
The route that was driven was mostly on Autoroutes in France, but did include some town driving, this resulted in a average speed of 45mph. The challenge was done over 3 days, with a navigator and a video crew with him inside the car , followed closely by two AA patrolmen who independently witnessed their attempt to break the world record.
The Volkswagen Passat used was powered by a 1.6 common rail diesel, the one used was the BlueMotion TDI 105PS model. This special BlueMotion edition is fitted with aerodynamic body parts, lowered suspension, stop/start technology, longer gearing and low profile tyres.
The fuel tank of the Passat was drained before the journey and then filled with 77.25litres of diesel resulting in a staggering 89.93mpg. This exceeds Volkswagen’s own claims of the BlueMotion of 64.2mpg. The total cost per mile for the trip worked out at just 6.17 pence per mile.
Setting the world record in the car they travelled the equivalent of driving from New York to Los Angeles without stopping for diesel.
