Sales Of Scrappage Scheme Cars Hit Over 320,000

The government have released a report of the current new cars sold so far. With the current scrappage scheme coming to a close at the end of the month.

By the end of February 324,991 new cars were registered through the scrappage scheme with another month to go. 19.6% of all new car sales were accounted by the scrappage scheme.

With the original scrappage scheme launched to improve the co2 emissions for the future, the average co2 from new cars are 147 co2 g/km - where as previous used cars averaged at around the 181 co2 g/km figure. The average for new cars bought through the scrappage scheme is 132 co2 g/km.

This is a massive improvement for the environment for future cars as the scrappage scheme has proved that it does work. Over 70% of cars registered through the scrappage scheme being in the mini or the supermini category, even 1% of super cars were registered through the scrappage scheme with the average age of cars being 12 years old.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of SMMT (the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders limited) said:

“The scrappage scheme ends this month and has provided a vital stimulus during a difficult period. The scheme has lifted the market from the lows of early 2009, with around 330,000 registrations by the end of February. Industry must now work to sustain this momentum and is urging government to postpone the introduction of the first year rate of VED and avoid dampening demand while the economic recovery remains fragile.”
