Scrappage Scheme Comes To An End
The Scrappage Scheme came to an end on the 31st of March 2010. In total over 370,000 new cars have been registered since its launch.
On the 31st of March, a total of 372,401 new cars were registered through the Scrappage scheme. 12.2% of new cars registered in March were through the Scrappage scheme as buyers rushed to trade in their used cars for new cars.
The Scrappage scheme also accounted for 6,577 new vans registered on the roads, which was 3.2% of the total van market since its launch in May 2009.
The Scrappage scheme was initially launched to reduce the CO2 emissions on UK roads and figures prove that it did work, as the average figure was 132.9g/km, which is 27.1% lower than the current scrapped cars that were traded in.
Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive said:
“Final scrappage orders had to be placed by the end of March and already almost 380,000 vehicles have been registered, out of the 400,000 available. The scheme has provided a hugely important stimulus to the market and leaves industry in far better health than we saw in pre-scrappage 2009. Consumers will also benefit from the improved fuel efficiency, the latest safety features and cleaner tailpipe emissions available from the new vehicles purchased through the scheme.”
