Toyota Pedal Recall
Toyota have today agreed to fix all accelerator pedals on affected Toyota used cars in Europe.
Toyota have confirmed that they will recall all of the used cars that have been affected by the sticky throttle pedal. The engineers at Toyota have designed and rigorously tested a fix that will reinforce the pedal assembly to eliminate the risk of the throttle pedal sticking.
The used car models affected are below, also below is a guide from Toyota on what to do if this happens to you.
- AYGO (Feb 2005 – Aug 2009)
- iQ (Nov 2008 – Nov 2009)
- Yaris (Nov 2005 – Sep 2009)
- Auris (Oct 2006 – 5 Jan 2010)
- Corolla (Oct 2006 – Dec 2009)
- Verso (Feb 2009 – 5 Jan 2010)
- Avensis (Nov 2008 – Dec 2009)
- RAV4 (Nov 2005 – Nov 2009)

Safety Advice Whilst Driving: -
- For Toyota used cars with manual transmission, depress the clutch pedal and shift to Neutral and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
- For Toyota used cars with automatic transmission, Multi Mode Transmission or CVT: Shift the transmission gear select lever to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road and turn off the engine.
- If you need to stop immediately, the car can be controlled by stepping firmly and steadily on the brake pedal. Do not pump the brake pedal as it will deplete the vacuum utilised for the power brake assist.
- If unable to put the car in Neutral, turn the engine OFF. This will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
- If the car is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push and hold the button to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a conventional key-ignition, turn the ignition key to the ACC position to turn off the engine. Do NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.
Toyota are still investigating as the recall goes on - but they estimate at least 1.8 million used cars affected around Europe.
No Lexus or any other model of Toyota have been affected. Neither have the following: Prius, Urban Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser V8, Hilux, Hiace, Dyna.
Tadashi Arashima, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe said:
“Toyota’s policy is to put its customers first, in all circumstances” he added:
“We understand that the current situation is creating concerns, and we deeply regret it. We would also like to reassure customers: the potential accelerator pedal issue only occurs in very rare circumstances. The recall action is a precautionary measure aimed to guarantee the highest quality standards to all customers. At Toyota, we are fully committed to safety, we know what the problem is and how to fix it, so now our focus is to make that fix as quickly as possible. We will make the necessary checks to ensure future customers do not receive an affected vehicle.”
