UK Used Car Scrappage Scheme Extended
The UK Government has decided to extend the current used car scrappage scheme by a month until the end of March.
The used car scrappage scheme was due to end in February but the government have confirmed that they would give an extension to the manufacturers of new cars and dealerships “more time to prepare for and operate the exit phase of the scheme”
The government put £400m in a pot to fund the used car scrappage scheme but not all of it has been used for the 400,000 used cars that can be scrapped.
Currently only 330,000 new cars have been ordered through the scheme which means 70,000 people can still benefit from the used car scrappage scheme
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said about the current scheme:
"Against the background of the economic downturn the Scrappage scheme has proved a great success, driving UK car sales, protecting jobs and supporting the supply chain for car manufacturers at a time when this sector needed it most" he added:
"If you're considering buying a new car, you should place your order as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, because the budget is strictly limited."
